Winter Work Jacket, Bodywarmer or Lined Trousers? | Saniso

Winter Work Jacket, Bodywarmer or Lined Trousers? | Saniso

Which winter work jacket, bodywarmer or trousers fit your job and the weather? If it is dry or drizzly and you keep moving, a softshell is often enough. For real cold, steady rain or long hours standing still, pick an insulated work jacket, in a high-visibility colour if you work along the road. Want your arms free, or are your legs the problem? Add a bodywarmer or lined winter work trousers.

The STALCO range at Saniso runs from light softshells to padded 3-in-1 and 5-in-1 jackets, insulated vests and lined trousers, in sizes XS to 5XL. Saniso B.V. in Zwaag sells the STALCO and STALCO PERFECT brands as a wholesaler and webshop.

Which winter work jacket suits which weather?

Start with two questions: what is the weather doing, and how much do you move? Someone laying paving stones in a cold wind needs something different from a driver who waits next to a lorry for an hour. The table below is a starting point, not a rule.

In short: the more you stand still and the wetter it gets, the more insulation and rain protection you need. The more you move, the lighter you can go.

Why wear a proper outer layer for winter work?

Your outer layer is the part that meets the weather. It keeps wind and rain out, so the warm layers underneath can do their job. Once your clothes are wet or the wind blows through them, you get cold fast, even when you are working hard.

The product pages show what each line adds:

  • Wind and rain: PHOENIX, ROCK and NEON have a TPU membrane; PHOENIX lists 8000 mm with 3000 MVP breathability. LOGAN J lists a TPU membrane of 3000 mm.
  • Warmth: the insulated jackets have a polyester filling; LOGAN J lists a filling of 250 g/m².
  • Being seen: several lines come in high-visibility colours with reflective tape, some with an EN ISO 20471 class on the page.
  • One garment for changing weather: detachable sleeves, hoods or linings, and reversible models.
  • Wear and tear: tough OXFORD fabric on jackets such as PETER (600D) and FLASH (300D), plus CORDURA reinforcements on LOGAN.

Who wears winter work jackets, bodywarmers and lined trousers?

Anyone who works outside in the cold or in an unheated space. Think of work in construction, paving or roofing, on the road, in a warehouse or yard, or in transport and logistics, where you keep stepping in and out of the cab.

There are two groups with specific needs:

  • People who must be clearly visible, for example near traffic or machinery. They pick a line in a high-visibility colour.
  • Women, who will find one women's model in this range: AUGUST W, in sizes XS to 2XL. All other models in this guide are men's models.

Softshell work jackets for wind, drizzle and movement

A softshell work jacket is light and flexible. It suits dry cold and drizzle when you keep moving. It is not a padded winter jacket, so in hard frost you wear warm layers underneath or choose an insulated jacket.

The mm figure on a softshell page is the manufacturer's membrane value. It is a different measurement from an EN 343 rain rating, so do not compare the two directly.

PHOENIX and ROCK: everyday softshell with a membrane

PHOENIX, such as the black jacket in size L (S-44015), has a stretch fabric with 4% elastane and a TPU membrane of 8000 mm with 3000 MVP. It has a detachable hood, reflective elements and four zipped pockets. Sizes run from S to 3XL.

ROCK is the more affordable option, in grey or navy and sizes S to 4XL. The page lists a TPU membrane of 8000 mm and MVP 4000, a shaped hood and reflective elements. Navy in size L is S-51748. Planning to wear it in wet weather? Check how the product page describes rain protection, for example on the grey ROCK in size M (S-51732).

NEON: softshell in a high-visibility colour

NEON is a softshell in yellow or orange with sewn-on reflective tape. The page of the yellow jacket in size M (S-44039) lists EN ISO 20471 class 3, an 8000 mm TPU membrane and 3000 MVP. A good choice if you move a lot and need to be seen, for example on site in the dark.

AUGUST: insulated hybrid softshell for men and women

AUGUST combines softshell with insulated inserts. The men's AUGUST M in size L (S-78418) has a polyester filling, a stand-up collar and two zipped waist pockets. The women's AUGUST W in size M (S-78841) has a fitted cut and thumb holes, and its page mentions outdoor work and unheated rooms.

Insulated work jackets for real cold

A padded or insulated work jacket is for cold days when you stand still a lot, or work outside for hours. The filling of these jackets is polyester. What makes the difference is the outer fabric, the rain protection and how flexible the jacket is.

PETER, RONIN J and LOGAN J: padded jackets in workwear colours

  • PETER (S-44161, navy, size L) is made of OXFORD 600D with a polyurethane coating, an internal windproof belt and a longer back. The sleeves and hood come off, so you can also wear it as a vest. Graphite or navy, S to 3XL.
  • RONIN J (S090797005, black, size L) has an Oxford fabric with a polyurethane coating against moisture, a fleece stand-up collar and a detachable hood. It is one of two lines that go up to 5XL.
  • LOGAN J (S-79440, black, size L) from STALCO PERFECT has a TPU membrane of 3000 mm, a filling of 250 g/m², CORDURA reinforcements and a detachable hood. Black or olive, S to 3XL.

FLASH, PILOT and BOMBER: insulated high-visibility jackets

Working along the road or between machines? Then you need a high-visibility winter jacket. The classes and ratings differ per line, so check them on the page of the jacket you pick.

  • FLASH (S-44177, yellow, size S) is made of OXFORD 300D with taped seams. Its page lists EN 343:2019 / 3 and EN ISO 20471 class 3, and up to 25 washes.
  • PILOT HI-VIS (S-44086, yellow, size L) is a pilot-style jacket in a neon fabric with cotton. Collar, lining and sleeves come off. The page lists EN ISO 20471 class 2 and a maximum of 5 washes.
  • BOMBER 3in1 (S090700019, yellow, size L) has a coated OXFORD 300D polyester outer fabric; see the product page for the exact coating. Collar, lining, hood and sleeves come off. The page lists EN 343 class 3/1, EN ISO 20471 class 2 and up to 25 washes. Sizes S to 5XL.
  • REVERS J 2in1 (S090797013, yellow, size L) from STALCO PERFECT is a reversible insulated rain jacket: a warning side for work and a graphite side for everyday use. Its page names EN 343 and EN ISO 20471 without a class.

2-in-1, 3-in-1 or 5-in-1: what do the numbers mean?

The number tells you how many ways you can wear the jacket:

  • 2-in-1 (REVERS J and REVERS V): one garment, two sides you can wear.
  • 3-in-1 (BOMBER): an outer jacket with detachable parts, such as collar, lining, hood and sleeves.
  • 5-in-1 (FLASH 5in1, such as S-44178 in yellow, size M): a double jacket with five combinations. The inner jacket's sleeves come off, so it also works as a bodywarmer.

For the FLASH 5in1 the page lists EN 343 class 3/1 and EN ISO 20471 class 3 for the jacket, but class 2 for the sleeveless part. So taking the sleeves off also changes the visibility class.

Bodywarmer or jacket: when is a vest enough?

A work bodywarmer, or insulated work vest, keeps your core warm while your arms stay free for lifting, climbing and tools. It works well on dry, cold days, or over a sweater under a light jacket. In steady rain or hard frost on your arms, a full jacket is the better choice.

RONIN and LOGAN V: insulated bodywarmers for site and yard

The RONIN bodywarmer from STALCO is navy and is the most affordable option. It has an OXFORD fabric, a 2000 mm TPU windproof membrane, a fleece-lined stand-up collar and roomy armholes. Choose for example size M (S-44023) or size L (S-44025).

LOGAN V from STALCO PERFECT, such as black in size L (S-79416), has a TPU membrane of 3000 mm, CORDURA reinforcements and, unusually for a vest, a detachable, adjustable hood. Black or olive, S to 3XL.

REVERS V: reversible bodywarmer with a high-visibility side

REVERS V 2in1 has a yellow reflective side and a quilted grey side. The yellow vest in size L (S091090003) lists EN ISO 20471 class 2, four zipped vertical pockets and sizes S to 4XL. Handy if you need to be seen on site and want to wear the grey side after work.

Lined winter work trousers for cold legs

Kneeling on cold paving or standing on frozen ground cools your legs fast. The WINTER BASIC LINE trousers (S-51764, grey, size L) are made of 65% polyester and 35% cotton with an insulating polyester filling. For the exact fill weight, see the product page.

The trousers have OXFORD 300D pockets, OXFORD 600D inserts, triple-stitched seams, a hammer loop, a folding rule pocket and an elastic waistband. Sizes run from S to 4XL, in grey. The product page does not mention a waterproof coating, so in the rain wear rain trousers over them.

Sizes and layering: leave room underneath

Under your outer layer you usually wear thermal underwear and often a fleece or sweater. Your jacket, bodywarmer or trousers need room for that, without pulling across your shoulders or knees when you bend.

  • Most lines come in S to 3XL.
  • ROCK, REVERS J, REVERS V and the WINTER BASIC LINE trousers go up to 4XL.
  • BOMBER 3in1 and RONIN J go up to 5XL.
  • AUGUST W is the only line with XS.

Each size and colour has its own product page, so you choose the exact size there. Not sure between two sizes? Ask Saniso before you order.

Washing also counts. The PETER and FLASH jackets are washed at 30 °C according to their pages, and the WINTER BASIC LINE trousers at 40 °C. The care instructions differ per line, so follow the product page of your item.

FAQ

Is a softshell jacket warm enough for working outside in winter?

On dry, cold days when you keep moving, often yes, with warm layers underneath. A softshell mainly stops wind and drizzle. If you stand still for long or it freezes hard, an insulated jacket such as PETER (S-44161) or LOGAN J (S-79440) is warmer. The insulated AUGUST hybrid sits in between.

When is a bodywarmer enough instead of a full work jacket?

When it is dry, you work hard and you want your arms free. A bodywarmer such as RONIN (S-44023) keeps your core warm. In steady rain, or when your arms get cold, wear a jacket. With PETER and FLASH 5in1 you can take the sleeves off, so you have both in one.

What does 3-in-1 or 5-in-1 mean on a work jacket?

It is the number of ways you can wear it. A 3-in-1 such as BOMBER (S090700019) is one jacket with detachable parts. A 5-in-1 such as FLASH 5in1 (S-44178) is an outer and an inner jacket that you combine in five ways, including the inner jacket as a bodywarmer.

Are insulated work jackets waterproof?

Not all of them in the same way, so look at the product page of the jacket. The clearest sign is an EN 343 rating: FLASH lists EN 343:2019 / 3, FLASH 5in1 and BOMBER 3in1 list EN 343 class 3/1, and REVERS J lists EN 343 without a class. LOGAN J gives a membrane value of 3000 mm instead. FLASH also has taped seams.

When do you need a high-visibility winter jacket?

When your employer or the site asks for visible clothing, or when you work near traffic or machinery, especially in the dark. Insulated lines in a high-visibility colour are FLASH, FLASH 5in1, PILOT HI-VIS, BOMBER 3in1 and REVERS J; NEON is the softshell option. The class differs per line, so check it on the product page.

Which size work jacket should you order if you wear layers underneath?

Choose a size that leaves room for thermal underwear and a fleece or sweater, so you can still lift your arms and bend freely. Every size has its own product page, from XS (AUGUST W) to 5XL (BOMBER 3in1 and RONIN J). If you are in doubt, ask Saniso before you order.

Are lined winter work trousers waterproof?

The WINTER BASIC LINE trousers (S-51764) are lined and insulated, but their product page does not mention a waterproof coating or membrane. In rain, wear rain trousers over them.
