Descaling a shower head for an even spray
Short answer: unscrew the shower head, soak it in a suitable descaler or vinegar solution according to the label, brush the jets gently and rinse well. Then test without the head: if water flows strongly through the hose, the problem was in the head. That prevents replacing a tap while only limescale is in the way.
👷 Calling in a professional is never unnecessary. For a concealed shower, a thermostatic tap that also regulates badly or a leak at the connection, an installer remains the safest choice. Pipework behind the wall belongs to a certified installer.
What matters most
- Look at the spray pattern: jets that spray sideways or holes without water often point to limescale in a Luvio shower head.
- Test head and hose separately: a good flow from a loose metal shower hose means the tap usually gives enough water.
- Replacing can be smarter: if the head is cracked, discoloured or keeps leaking, fit a new head with the same connection, possibly with a suitable Zen thermostatic shower tap if control is also old.
What do you need?
- An 12-litre bucket to soak the head safely and a soft brush for the jets.
- A mild cleaner such as Fila Brio universal cleaner to clean the outside after descaling.
- A water pump pliers set or an adjustable wrench only with a cloth between tool and chrome, plus a pipe wrench only if a fitting is really stuck.

How to do it
- Turn the shower off and unscrew the head by hand. Catch any small washer in the shower tray.
- Soak the head according to the product directions. Do not leave it longer than needed.
- Brush the spray plate and never poke jets with a hard needle; that makes the opening larger.
- Rinse the head, refit it hand-tight and check for leaks at the fitting.
- Test hot and cold and see whether the spray is even. Read more in our blog on descaling a shower enclosure about descaling a whole shower enclosure.
Working safely
Wear work gloves with nitrile coating and safety goggles with descalers, ventilate the bathroom and never mix products. Use sanitary silicone sealant and a sealant gun only for sealant joints, never to smear over a leaking fitting. Place a step firmly if you must reach a high rain shower.
How often should I descale a shower head?
That depends on the water and use. As soon as jets deflect or the spray feels harder and thinner, it is time. Drying the head after showering helps limit limescale.
The spray stays weak after descaling. What next?
Check the filter in the fitting and test without the head. If the hose is also weak, the tap or a filter in the connection may be the cause. Have an installer check that.
Always start with the head itself. That is the smallest job and in many homes also the real cause.
