Order and tidiness during renovation: safer and finished faster
During a renovation chaos quickly arises: tools on the floor, cables criss-crossing the room, dust on everything and waste in every corner. That is not only inconvenient, it is also dangerous. Tripping and slipping are common causes of accidents during DIY jobs. With a few fixed habits you work more safely and are often finished sooner too.
Keep walkways clear
- Agree on a fixed walking route and keep it clear.
- Run extension cords along the wall and not across the walkway. Fully unwind a 25 metre cable reel when in use so it does not heat up. Bundle loose cables with cable ties.
- Cordon off a danger zone, such as an open floor or a demolition area, with red and white barrier tape.
- Make sure there is good light with a rechargeable LED work lamp so you see where you walk. Read more about work lights in our blog on work lights.
Remove waste immediately
Do not wait until the end of the day. Demolition waste with nails or sharp edges goes straight into a 60 litre rectangular construction tub or 20 litre bucket. Sweep in between with a 50 cm industrial broom and a metal dustpan. That way you avoid stepping on a screw or nail.

Limit dust
Fine construction dust is bad for your lungs and spreads through the whole house.
- Cover furniture and floors with masking film and close the door of the work room.
- Use a construction vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter for the construction vacuum instead of only a broom for fine dust.
- Wear an FFP2 dust mask when sanding, sawing and cleaning up.
A fixed place for tools
Put tools back in a fixed place after use, for example in a box or on a table. You search less, and nothing lies on the floor to trip over. Remove batteries from tools when you put them away. Read more about good tools in our brand blog on Stalco.
Protect yourself
Even when everything is tidy, wear the right PPE:
- safety shoe with a steel toe cap and an anti-perforation sole against nails. Read our blog on choosing safety shoes.
- work gloves with nitrile coating when clearing demolition waste.
- safety goggles when drilling, sawing and demolishing.
- Hearing protection for noisy work; read our blog on hearing protection.
💡 Plan ten minutes of tidying time at the end of each day. The next morning you then start with a clean, safe workspace.
👷 Calling in a professional is never unnecessary. If you come across material suspected of containing asbestos during demolition, stop immediately and have it examined by a certified company. Always leave electrics and gas to a certified installer.
