A manual valve opens and closes by hand. A thermostatic valve with head regulates the flow automatically to keep the room at the set temperature.

Check the connection size (usually 1/2") and whether the pipe comes from the wall or the floor. A thermostatic valve saves energy per room; a manual valve is simple and robust.

Replace the valve and lockshield together with a kit for a matching finish, and drain or isolate the system before you start.
