How to connect a new shower tap: step-by-step DIY guide
A new shower tap gives your bathroom a fresh look straight away and can even make showering more pleasant. Replacing a surface-mounted tap is a job many DIYers can do themselves, as long as you work calmly and precisely. This blog explains step by step how to go about it.
⚠️ Do not underestimate water. If you are unsure about the pipes, if the tap is built in or work in the wall is needed, call in a registered plumber. Where gas or electricity is near the bathroom, never work on it yourself. A professional is never superfluous.
What do you need to replace a shower tap?
Which materials do you need?
- A new tap, for example the Zen thermostatic shower tap, with the supplied fixings.
- A Luvio shower head and a metal shower hose if you replace those too.
- Sanitary sealant such as sanitary silicone sealant and blue painter's tape for a neat finish.
Which tools do you need?
- A pipe wrench, an adjustable wrench and water pump pliers set for loosening and tightening connections.
- A combination wrench set and a screwdriver set.
- A 60 cm spirit level to fit the tap straight.
- A sealant gun and a 12-litre bucket for residual water.
Which protective equipment do you need?
work gloves with nitrile coating and safety goggles when loosening old, stuck parts. You can read more about pliers in our buyer's guide to water pump pliers and pipe wrenches.
Preparation
Shut off the water supply and open the tap to release the pressure. Put a cloth in the shower tray to prevent scratches. Take a photo of the old set-up and measure the distance between the connections (centre to centre). Check that the new tap fits that distance. Read the manufacturer's instructions. See also our blog about the rain shower.

Step by step: how to connect a shower tap
- Shut off the water supply and make sure the pipes are depressurised.
- Remove the old tap carefully with pipe wrench and spanner; hold the pipe so it does not turn with it.
- Clean the connections and check the pipe for damage.
- Fit the new tap as the manufacturer prescribes, with the supplied seals and rosettes.
- Level the tap and tighten the connections hand-tight with a little feel; do not overtighten.
- Open the water supply slowly and check all connections for leaks.
- Connect the shower head and hose and test the temperature and spray.
- Seal any joints along the wall with sanitary sealant; see our blog on resealing a bathroom with new silicone.
Common mistakes
- Not shutting off the water properly.
- Overtightening, damaging the thread or seal.
- Not fitting the tap level.
- Not testing for leaks before sealing.
💡 Keep a dry cloth at hand and wipe all connections dry after opening the water. That way you immediately see where a drip comes from.
Working safely
Wear gloves and glasses, keep the floor dry and work with good lighting. You can read more about safe working in our blog on safe working on the construction site.
