How to tile a bathroom: step-by-step DIY guide

How to tile a bathroom: step-by-step DIY guide

A new bathroom with tiles that suit you: many DIYers take on this job. A bathroom is a wet room, though, so good preparation and a watertight build-up are important. This blog explains what you need, how to work step by step and when to call in a tiler.

⚠️ In a bathroom everything depends on a good, watertight substrate and sealing. If you are unsure about the floor build-up, moisture protection or drains, call in a registered tiler or plumber. A professional is never superfluous.

What do you need to tile a bathroom?

Which materials do you need?

Which tools do you need?

Which protective equipment do you need?

work gloves with nitrile coating, safety goggles when cutting, FFP2 dust mask against dust and Raimondi knee pads with gel for work on the floor. You can read more about tile tools in our blog on Raimondi tile tools.

Preparation

Check that the substrate is flat, dry, firm and clean. Measure the room, determine the starting line and lay the tiles out dry so that you can plan the cuts. For the substrate and sealing, always follow the tile and adhesive manufacturers' instructions. You can read more about tiling in our blog on tiling a wall and our blog on tiling a floor.

Step by step: how to tile a bathroom

  1. Clean the substrate and apply primer where needed.
  2. Mark a horizontal starting line with the spirit level.
  3. Mix the adhesive in the bucket according to the packaging.
  4. Spread the adhesive with the notched trowel over a small area.
  5. Place the tiles and press them down; use tile spacers or a levelling system.
  6. Cut tiles to size with the tile cutter and check the level regularly.
  7. Let the adhesive cure according to the packaging.
  8. Grout, clean the tiles with the sponge and remove cement haze.
  9. Seal corners and transitions with sanitary sealant; read more in our blog on resealing a bathroom with new silicone.

Common mistakes

  • A substrate that is not flat or dry.
  • Spreading too much adhesive at once so it skins over.
  • Not using a spirit level so rows go crooked.
  • Grouting on a wet area, so colour and strength differ.

💡 Plan the last row and the corners in advance. This avoids narrow strips in visible places.

Working safely

Wear glasses when cutting and a dust mask when grinding. Ventilate the room. You can read more about safe working in our blog on safe working on the construction site.
