Plastering a wall: DIY or professional? How to choose
A smooth, even wall is the foundation of a nicely finished interior. Plastering looks simple, but good plasterwork takes experience in mixing, applying and finishing the material. In this blog we help you choose: do it yourself or hire a plasterer? Both choices can be good, as long as you make them deliberately.
👷 A professional is never superfluous. A plasterer works faster, achieves an even result and knows how to deal with difficult substrates. Doing it yourself works fine on small, dry and sound walls, provided you take your time and have your tools and protection in order.
When can you plaster yourself?
- On small areas, such as part of a wall or a niche.
- On a dry, firm and clean substrate.
- If you are patient and do not need a perfect finish in one go.
- If you follow the manufacturer's instructions and work calmly.
When is a plasterer the better choice?
- On large areas and high rooms, such as a whole living room or stairwell.
- On a substrate with damp, mould, cracks or loose plaster.
- If you expect a smooth, sharp result, for example for a high-gloss finish or decorative plaster.
- If you are short of time or prefer the job to be done by someone who does this every day.

What do you need to plaster yourself?
Materials and tools
- The plaster material, for example Knauf Goldband Quick hand plaster, and a deep-penetrating primer for the substrate.
- A internal plastering trowel and a putty knife with aluminium blade for applying and finishing.
- A Raimondi mortar mixer and an 12-litre bucket for mixing.
- A ABS sponge float and a paint scraper for smoothing and removing residue.
- Masking film to protect floor and belongings and a folding ladder with handle for higher areas.
- A construction vacuum cleaner for cleaning up.
Personal protective equipment
- Work gloves with nitrile coating to protect your skin, safety goggles against splashes and a FFP2 dust mask against dust.
- Knee pads if you work on the floor.
How to proceed
- Clean the substrate, make sure it is dry and firm and scrape away loose parts.
- Cover the floor and frames and apply the primer.
- Mix the plaster according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- Apply the material in an even layer and pull it flat.
- Finish with the sponge or trowel as soon as the material is ready for finishing.
- Let everything dry calmly and clear up dust and residue.
💡 Work with small amounts at a time, so the material does not set before you have finished.
Working safely
Dust and splashes can irritate. Wear gloves, safety glasses and a dust mask. Use a sturdy ladder and ensure good ventilation. Frequently asked questions
Can I plaster a whole room myself?
You can, but it takes a lot of experience to get a smooth result. For a whole room a plasterer is often the best choice.
What if the wall is damp or damaged?
Have a professional assess it first. Plastering over a damp substrate does not solve the problem.
Do I need to prime?
That depends on the substrate and the material. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
