STALCO utility knives for the job: snap-off, trapezoid or hook blade?

STALCO utility knives for the job: snap-off, trapezoid or hook blade?

Why this brand · STALCO #3 · The brands Saniso stocks, and why

STALCO utility knives come in a few clear types: snap-off knives with 18 or 9 mm blades, a knife with a trapezoid blade, hook blades for floor coverings and foil, and a long insulation knife for mineral wool. In this third STALCO edition of our series Why this brand we look only at knives and blades: how the blade types differ, which STALCO knife suits which job, and how you keep cutting safely and cleanly. The wider STALCO range already has its own overview in STALCO at Saniso: tools, paint accessories and batteries from one brand, so here it gets one link.

In short

The idea: the right blade shape makes a cut cleaner, safer and faster.

Snap-off knives: 18 mm for all-round work, 9 mm for precise cuts; snap off a dull segment and keep going.

Trapezoid knife: a short, firm blade in an aluminium housing for packaging, carpet and linoleum.

Hook blades and insulation knife: hooks for foil and floor coverings, a serrated 340 mm blade for mineral wool up to 100 mm.

Priced today: 7 products in stock from €1.23, incl. and excl. VAT.

Why choose STALCO utility knives?

A sharp knife is one of the most used tools on any job, from opening boxes to cutting wallpaper, film, carpet or insulation. A blunt blade tears the material and needs more force, and that is when a knife slips. STALCO and STALCO PERFECT cover the common blade types under one brand page, and the product pages list what you need to choose: the blade width or size, the housing, the lock and the materials the knife is made for. The spare blades come in packs of 10, so a fresh edge is always within reach.

Which STALCO knives and blades does Saniso stock?

The table shows the seven STALCO products in this article, with the blade type, the main uses and the size as listed on their product pages. The brand page has more: other snap-off knives, spare blade packs, installer's knives and precision knife sets.

What is the difference between a snap-off knife, a trapezoid knife and a hook blade?

A snap-off knife has a long blade divided into segments. When the tip gets dull, you snap off one segment and have a new sharp point right away. An 18 mm blade is the all-rounder, a 9 mm blade is narrower and more precise. A trapezoid knife holds a short, thick blade with a cutting edge on the long side; it feels firmer and suits heavier cuts. A hook blade fits the same kind of knife or handle and has a curved hook that you pull through the material, so you cut a floor covering or foil from the top without damaging the surface underneath. For mineral wool, a long serrated insulation knife works better than any short blade.

Which STALCO snap-off knife suits your job: 18 mm or 9 mm?

For most jobs, an 18 mm snap-off knife is the right choice: wallpaper, cardboard, film, tape and insulation. The STALCO PERFECT version has a metal body, a bi-material handle and 5 spare blades in the magazine. For precise work, such as trimming along a profile or cutting thin film, a 9 mm knife gives you more control. Keep a pack of spare blades nearby and snap off a segment as soon as the knife starts to tear the material instead of cutting it.

When do you choose a trapezoid knife or a hook blade?

A trapezoid knife is the choice when you need a firm, short blade: cardboard packaging, carpet, linoleum or thicker film. Because the blade has two cutting corners, you can often turn it around once before you replace it. With a hook blade in a knife that takes it, you cut floor coverings and foil from the top: the hook goes under the edge and pulls through, so the floor underneath stays undamaged. Laying a new floor? Our step-by-step guide to laying a vinyl floor shows where these cuts come in.

Which knife do you use for mineral wool insulation?

Mineral wool is soft and fibrous, so a short blade tends to pull and fray it. A long, serrated insulation knife saws through the material in one straight movement and leaves a clean edge, which makes the slabs fit tightly between rafters or studs. The STALCO insulation knife has a serrated stainless steel blade of 340 mm and cuts rolls up to 100 mm thick. For the full insulation job itself, read our guide to insulating an attic.

STALCO insulation knife for mineral wool, 340 mm (S-17782)

An insulation knife with a long, serrated stainless steel blade of 1.5 mm and a comfortable plastic handle. The product page says the serrated edge makes it easier to cut a heterogeneous material such as mineral wool, the stable blade cuts rolls up to 100 mm thick, and the handle shape helps you make straight cuts without fraying the surface.

What is it for? Cutting mineral wool rolls and slabs to size in the attic, the wall or around pipes.

How do you work safely with a utility knife?

  • Always cut away from your body and keep your other hand behind the blade.
  • Slide the blade out only as far as you need and lock it; our guide to resealing your bathroom with new silicone also shows this when cutting old sealant.
  • Use a steel straightedge for long, straight cuts and press it down firmly.
  • Replace or snap off the blade as soon as it tears the material: a sharp blade needs less force and slips less.
  • Snap off segments away from your body, with eye protection, and keep used blades in a closed container.
  • Wear gloves that suit the job: read more about cut-resistant gloves and the EN 388 cut levels.
  • Retract the blade after every cut and before you put the knife in your pocket or tool belt.

Frequently asked questions

Which STALCO utility knife is the best all-rounder?
An 18 mm snap-off knife. The STALCO PERFECT snap-off knife of 18 mm has a metal body, a bi-material handle and 5 spare blades in the magazine, and costs €10.42 incl. VAT.

When do I use a 9 mm snap-off knife?
For precise cuts, such as trimming film or paper along a straightedge or a profile. The STALCO 9 mm snap-off knife has an automatic blade lock and costs €1.23 incl. VAT.

Do the STALCO PERFECT Silver snap-off blades fit my knife?
They are 18 mm wide with seven segments, so they suit a snap-off knife that takes 18 mm blades. You find that width on the product page of your knife or on the knife itself.

What is a trapezoid blade?
A short, thick blade with the cutting edge on the long side. According to the product page, the STALCO PERFECT Silver trapezoid blades of 0.6 × 62 mm fit all trapezoid hand knives.

What do I use a hook blade for?
For cutting foil, fabric and linoleum from the top, without cutting into the surface underneath. The STALCO PERFECT Silver hook blades come in a pack of 10 for €4.20 incl. VAT.

Can I cut mineral wool with a normal utility knife?
A long serrated insulation knife works best, because a short blade frays the wool quickly. The STALCO insulation knife of 340 mm cuts rolls up to 100 mm thick and costs €13.53 incl. VAT.

When should I snap off a segment or change the blade?
As soon as the knife starts to tear the material instead of cutting it cleanly. A sharp blade needs less force, so it is also safer.

How do I snap off a blade segment safely?
Slide out only the dull segment, point the blade away from your body, wear eye protection and snap it off with pliers or the snap-off aid if your knife has one. Keep used segments in a closed container.

Which gloves do I wear when I cut with a knife?
Gloves with a cut level that suits the job. Read more about cut-resistant gloves and the EN 388 cut levels.

Are the prices on this page current?
