How to hang heavy items on a wall: step-by-step DIY guide
A heavy mirror, bookcase or TV bracket has to stay up, even when someone pulls on it or bumps into it. That means choosing the right plug and screw for your type of wall. In this blog you will read how to do that step by step, which protection to wear and when to ask a professional.
⚠️ Behind a wall there may be pipes for water, gas or electricity. Check this beforehand with a wall detector. If you do hit a pipe, stop immediately. If you are in doubt about pipes, call a qualified installer. A professional is also never superfluous for very heavy or risky objects.
What do you need to hang heavy items?
Which materials do you need?
- Plugs that suit the wall: a universal expansion plug for brick and concrete, a plasterboard plug for plasterboard.
- screws for wood and chipboard that match the plug and the weight.
Which tools do you need?
- A SDS-plus rotary hammer with a SDS-plus concrete drill bit for brick and concrete.
- A multifunction wall detector to find pipes and metal in the wall.
- A tape measure with auto-lock, a carpenter pencil and a 60 cm spirit level for measuring.
- A construction vacuum cleaner to clean the drill hole and the floor.
Personal protective equipment
- work gloves with nitrile coating, safety goggles and a FFP2 dust mask against drilling dust.
- earplugs when drilling for a long time with a rotary hammer.
Preparation
First check the weight of the object and look in the bracket or shelf instructions for what the manufacturer recommends. Decide where the wall is brick, concrete or plasterboard. Use the wall detector to look for pipes and studs and mark the spot with a pencil. Measure the height and check with the spirit level.

Step by step: how to hang something heavy safely
- Mark the holes on the wall with the spirit level and pencil.
- Choose a drill bit that matches the plug and the wall.
- Drill the hole straight and to the right depth. Vacuum the dust away.
- Insert the plug until it sits flush with the wall.
- Drive the screw in, leaving just enough room for the bracket.
- Hang the object and check it is firmly attached before you load it.
💡 If the object is very heavy, look for a stud or metal profile behind the plasterboard, or choose a fixing designed for it.
Common mistakes
- Choosing a plug that does not suit the wall.
- Drilling too shallow or not removing the dust.
- Not checking for pipes.
- Overestimating the strength of the wall or underestimating the load.
Working safely
Wear safety glasses and a dust mask when drilling, ear protection with a rotary hammer and gloves when handling the object. Lift heavy items with two people.
